REWARDED TO MAINTAIN SKILLS
ANYWHERE, USA: From 16 states and territories we receive messages from seniors who say that their auto insurance companies will not give them an additional premium incentive for completing a safe driving course. The insurers say that they already give a discount to anyone age 50+ with a clean record whether they have improved their driving skills or not.
In 36 states, and in DC, the consumer-oriented legislatures mandate an additional premium reduction as an incentive for older drivers to complete a safe driving class. In some states such legislation is pending and needs support from many citizens for its prompt passage. Is your state one of these?
The legislative hesitation is not understandable. State legislators should be delighted to provide this benefit to its citizens as it requires no tax money. Likewise the insurers should jump at the savings.. If an insurer can save just one million dollar claim by encouraging its clients to improve their driving skills it would be way ahead financially. In fact, one large insurer says that it has data showing its extra 10% discount is justified by its claim savings.
Rewarding drivers who make the effort to improve and become safer makes much more sense than using an arbitrary age at which seniors pay higher premiums, are retested or are denied the privilege of driving.
